The Power of Gratitude: Transforming Mindset for Positive Change + 10 Practical Tips to Kickstart Your Gratitude Journey

The Superpower You Never Knew You Had

Welcome my curious warriors of wellness. We're about to embark on a gratitude journey, and let me tell you, it's not your typical "sunrise yoga by the beach" kind of adventure. Picture this: Yours truly, a devoted coffee enthusiast, stumbled upon the gift of gratitude one day, and let's just say, it was a real wake-up call – pun intended lol. Here I was, grumbling about Mondays, spilling my precious brew while about to leave for work, and my cat (the self-proclaimed ruler of the household) decides to leave me a fresh hot steamy pile of a gift right on my new bath mat (IMMEDIATELY AFTER I cleaned his litterbox, might I add). But in the midst of this caffeinated chaos, ready to scream into the void if one more thing seems to go wrong, I found myself called in a different direction. Call it my higher self, or even a Higher Power maybe, but I recalled a lesson I came upon (probably from Oprah’s Supersoul Conversations lol) reminding me of a practice of naming three things I am grateful for when feeling stressed or overwhelmed. In that moment, I named 3 things I was grateful for: Prince (said ruler), my breath, and my ability to be grateful. I suddenly felt my heart warmer, my nervous system calmer, and surprisingly, a beaming smile at Prince, of all beings, the divine little shit that just shat on my rug. So, dear readers, grab your coffee mugs, pet your plotting pets, and join me on this heartwarming expedition. In today’s post, we'll decode the science behind gratitude, get you started on your gratitude mission with practical tips, and sprinkle in some quirky gratitude nuggets on the way. Get ready for a gratitude journey like no other, because your daily dose of laughter and enlightenment starts now!

The Science Behind Gratitude

Alright, grab your pocket protectors, tape up those glasses, and don your imaginary lab coats because we’re getting our nerd on and diving deep into the science behind gratitude. Scientists have been geeking out over gratitude for ages, and the results are in – you know that snail serum people are putting on their face? (and by people, I may or may not mean me lol) Well, gratitude is like that super serum, but for your well-being! It has a host of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits, such as lowering stress levels, improving mental health, cultivating stronger relationships, and even the key to manifestation (but we’ll cover that more thoroughly in a different blog post, so stay tuned).
  • Let's start with lowering stress, shall we? Stress is like that annoying drunk guy at the club who doesn’t know personal boundaries. You know who I’m talking about. The one you have no idea is creeping up on you until he’s nonconsensually grinding his pelvis into you from behind...not like I’m speaking from personal experience or anything. Nobody wants him in their lives. Stress is a multi-faceted force that can wield significant impacts on our well-being. Physically, it can manifest as muscle tension, headaches, digestive problems, and even weaken our immune system over time, making us more susceptible to illnesses. Emotionally, stress often triggers feelings of anxiety, irritability, and mood swings, while also contributing to depression and a sense of overwhelm. Mentally, the cognitive effects of stress are evident through impaired concentration, memory problems, and decreased decision-making abilities. Together, these physical, emotional, and mental responses to stress highlight the importance of implementing effective stress management techniques in order to maintain our overall health and quality of life.
Luckily for you, Gratitude is the answer AND the bouncer you've been waiting for! Halleloo! Cuz you know some of these other bouncers ain’t shit lol. Okay, you caught me, I am talking from experience and yes I am referencing the bouncer who witnessed this man harassing me and continued to allow it to happen. But I ain’t worried, I’m grateful for them. They’ve made me stronger and more resilient. And just like that, I can feel my cortisol levels dropping 😉. No but really, listen to this quote by Robert A. Emmons, professor of psychology at UC Davis and a leading scientific expert on the science of gratitude. “The practice of gratitude can have dramatic and lasting effects in a person’s life. It can lower blood pressure, improve immune function, and facilitate more efficient sleep. Gratitude reduces lifetime risk for depression, anxiety, and substance abuse disorders, and is a key resiliency factor in the prevention of suicide.” So, the next time life throws you a curveball, just throw gratitude back and watch stress vanish like a magician's bunny! (To see the other 12 physical health benefits, click here for the UC Davis Health article.)
  • Now, for the improved mental health part – think of it as a mental spa day, just  without the fluffy robes and soothing whale songs. Gratitude quite literally helps rewire your brain to be as happy as Scrat (our favorite indestructible, prehistoric, buck-toothed squirrel from Ice Age) with an unlimited stash of acorns. It’s a concept called neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity, in simple terms, is the brain's remarkable ability to change and adapt throughout our lives. It's like a flexible, ever-evolving superpower that allows our brains to rewire themselves by forming new neural pathways (connections) between neurons (the brain's cells) and altering existing ones in response to learning, experiences, and even recovery from injuries. It means that our brains can continuously grow, develop, and recover, which is fundamental to our ability to learn new things, adapt to challenges, and heal from various conditions. Neuroplasticity is like the brain's way of staying agile and dynamic, no matter our age or circumstances. Long story short, Gratitude is like giving your noggin a "My [Happy] Chemical Romance"  VIP all access backstage pass! Studies published in "Positive Psychology" have shown that gratitude can boost your mood, lower depression, and even help you catch those elusive Z's. So, the next time you're tossing and turning in bed, try counting your blessings instead of sheep – they're way more interesting and probably much less itchy!
  • Ah, stronger relationships – the holy grail of our social lives! It's that feeling when your connection with someone is so solid that you practically finish each other's sentences and laugh (or cackle in my case lol) at each other's weird quirks without judgment. Now, imagine that your secret weapon for crafting these fantastic connections is none other than gratitude, the relationship glue that even a DIY enthusiast can't compete with. When you express authentic gratitude, it's like you're wrapping your words in a warm, fuzzy hug, except without the risk of suffocating anyone (phew!). It's like telling someone, "Hey, I see you, you're amazing, and I'm doing the happy dance because you exist!"
You already know I ain’t dropping knowledge without backing it up. Well, guess what? Studies published in the "Journal of Theoretical Social Psychology" have revealed that saying those two magic words, "thank you," can work wonders for relationship satisfaction. It's like having a secret recipe for relationship bliss, and you don't even need to be a master chef. Just sprinkle a little gratitude on your connections, or possibly even confections, and suddenly, it's like you've upgraded to the deluxe version of a good relationship – the kind that makes everyone else secretly jealous.
So, I challenge you to unleash the confetti cannon of gratitude on your relationships, because science says your connections are about to become more sweet and wholesome than a cat video marathon on a rainy Sunday afternoon! Healthy relationships, better relationships, good relationships – they're all within your reach, and it starts with the magic words: "Thank you."

10 Steps to Incorporating Gratitude into Your Daily Life

It's time to dive into the wonderful world of appreciation and discover how to infuse gratitude into your daily routine. I promise it'll be more fun than a game of Twister with a twist (see what I did there? lol). Okay, maybe not more fun than a game of Twister because I LOVE and am undefeated in Twister, but here are some actionable steps to get your gratitude practice flowing anyway:
  • Rise and shine like Kylie Jenner by expressing your appreciation for something, anything – no matter how big or small. Whether it's for that warm, cozy blanket, your steaming morning coffee, or the breathtaking sunrise, it's like sending a high-five to the universe right from your bed and opening that channel so that the universe can send a high-ten back atcha like Latrelle in White Chicks returning ‘Tiffany Wilson’ some gas...well maybe that’s not quite what you want, but you get the gist.
  • If you want to go all out in your practice, you can purchase a Gratitude Journal like this one on Amazon I got for a gift. It's complete with prompts and exercises to really get the heart open and gratitude flowing. Otherwise, you can grab a notebook (or opt for a gratitude app if you prefer digital), dedicate it as your gratitude journal, and jot or doodle down three things you're grateful for each day. Get creative and specific! It's like composing a love letter to life's blessings in bullet points…and that nerd in me loves me some bullet points.
  • Before indulging in your meal, take a pause to acknowledge and appreciate the nourishing food on your plate. Maybe thank Mother Earth for her provisions. If you believe in a Higher Power, praise it. Consider the incredible journey the food took from the farm to your table. By taking a moment of gratitude, and actually envisioning the long journey from farm to table, you’ll be much more present with and much more appreciative of your meal. I assure you, your taste buds will thank you!
  • During your daily stroll, immerse yourself in the beauty around you – the rustling leaves, the cheerful chirping of birds, or the captivating cityscape. Maybe take a moment to show gratitude for your ability to walk, or show thanks for your ability to see such beautiful and vivid colors. Express gratitude for all these magnificent wonders, no matter how insignificant it may seem. It's like transforming your walk into a nature-themed parade of appreciation.
  • Now, let's add a dash of fun! This month we are doing a fun gratitude challenge! Tune into ours here, or challenge yourself and your friends to a gratitude competition! Each day, share something you're grateful for in the quirkiest, most exaggerated way possible. Turn it into a game of one-upping each other with hilariously over-the-top gratitude declarations. Bonus points for creativity!
  • Spread appreciation by expressing your gratitude to someone you cherish through a heartfelt note or message. It brightens both your day and theirs.
  • Before you drift into slumber, remember to try counting blessings instead of sheep! Reflect on your day and pinpoint three moments that brought you joy or brought a smile to your face. You’ll be concluding your day with a warm, fuzzy mental embrace.
  • Incorporate gratitude into your mindfulness or meditation practice. Take a few breaths, focus on your heart center, and visualize a radiant ball of gratitude filling your heart and radiating outward. Literally bomb yourself with love and appreciation.
  • Infuse your day with gratitude affirmations like "I am thankful for tuning into Abundance" or "Gratitude fills me with joy." Give your mind a positive affirmation makeover, while further strengthening those newly created positive neuronal pathways.
  • Craft a vision board adorned with images and words representing what you're grateful for or what you aspire to attract into your life. By being grateful for what we have, vs focusing on what we don’t, that’s how we draw more goodness into our lives. Post your aspirations on your gratitude board. Be thankful for it as if it’s already yours. Via the Law of Attraction, the Universe will have no option but to send more ;-).
